Oasis International African Center of RI Annual Gala December 7, 2024

Oasis International - African Center of Rhode Island, a nonprofit social service agency located at 600 Broad Street in Providence that promotes and celebrates the varied African cultures in Rhode Island will be celebrating its 2024 scholarship and awards celebration on Saturday, December 7, 2024. The theme of the Gala is “Celebrating our Blessings and Sustaining Our Victories.”  The nonprofit celebrates 33 years of continuous services to the Southwest community of Providence with a jubilee annual dinner and awards fundraiser to support continuing youth program services.

 

The event will begin at 6 PM starting with a cocktail reception at The Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston, Rhode Island followed by a dinner and awards presentation program that begins at 7:30 PM. The keynote speaker of the evening is Congressman Gabe Amo. 


 Community Service Awards will be presented to Linda Avant Deishini, Exec. Director of St. Martin de Porres Center in Providence; Shane Lee -Director of Training & Special Projects at Nonviolence Institute, Providence; and Shawndell Burney Speaks – CEO/Owner, S. Burney-Speaks Consulting, LLC. Life. The Oasis International Young Professional Award is awarded to Oluwatoyin Omisore Founder/Chief of Roamloud, a premium brand of activewear and athleisure apparel.  The Oasis Professional Achievement Awardee is presented to Revive Therapeutic Services. The President’s Circle Award is awarded to Joyce K. Jonah – President of the United African Women RIA nominated by the African Community Leadership Forum (ACLF). 

 

Oasis International will award college scholarships to high school students who have been leaders among their peers. The 2024 finalists’ youth receiving scholarships will be announced in October 2024. Renowned artists and dance troupes will perform cultural dancing and live music. DJ Asap will provide music throughout the evening.

 

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit Oasis International youth programs. PRESS RELEASE SIX FLAGS TRIP Oasis International sponsors the annual Back to School Trip to Six Flags New England. The trip is on July 25th, 2024, for young people ages 10 years Plus. The comfortable coach bus leaves 600 Broad Street at 9 a.m. and leaves sixflags at 7 p.m. arriving in Providence at 9p.m. The cost of the trip is $60 per person for the Youth, and it includes transportation and entrance to the park, no meals included. The Collaborative focuses on counter-marketing and public education community engagement expanding the capacity of menthol-specific public health work with priority populations. We examine how the built environment, systems, and policies play a role in menthol tobacco use as well as how community-led efforts can affect change. Materials and community conversations have focused on providing educational information and facilitated discussion training on targeted practices related to menthol and other flavored commercial tobacco products on specific populations. The Collaborative experience, materials, and evaluation results will be shared with a discussion on next steps of the work in Rhode Island. Please feel free to share this invitation.
