African Summer Bash  August 3rd, 2024

The 31st Annual African Summer Bash will occur on August 3rd, 2024, at Richardson Park (on Prairie Ave.) in Providence from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is a collaborative effort of the African communities of Rhode Island and Oasis International -The African Center of Rhode Island. Help us make this a fully representative Bash to spotlight our magnificent cultures. This year you will be entertained by award- winning DJ ASAP and Cultural Dance groups. TRADITIONAL AFRICAN DRUM by Sidy Maiga, Dominican Dance Group by Iris Yinette; Black Storyteller group, Lydia Perez Yoruba Group- Puerto Rican Art. Oasis Youth Steppers, Black Story Tellers, RI Capeverdean Batuku group, Project Batuku; Wonderwoman, RI Black Drum Squad; and other professional dancers and singers from Boston.


There will be a Providence Health Center Wellness Team onsite for the community, Neighborhood’s health and BlueCross Wellness Team providing health information, Butler Memories and aging, United Health Care Community Plan, and RIDOH- TCP will be providing health information regarding Menthol Programs. Come out and check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checked for free. These simple screenings can identify a problem allowing for early treatment and prevention of serious health problems.

The Summer Bash lets you network and discover what’s new in the African Community. Come one come all to a free event to enjoy our community!!!!!

Oasis International sponsors the annual Back to School Trip to Six Flags New England. The trip is on July 25th, 2024, for young people ages 10 years plus. The comfortable coach bus leaves 600 Broad Street at 9 a.m. and leaves Six Flags at 7 p.m. arriving in Providence at 9 p.m. The cost of the trip is $60 per person for the Youth, and it includes transportation and entrance to the park, no meals included. The Collaborative focuses on counter-marketing and public education community engagement expanding the capacity of menthol-specific public health work with priority populations. We examine how the built environment, systems, and policies play a role in menthol tobacco use as well as how community-led efforts can affect change. Materials and community conversations have focused on providing educational information and facilitated discussion training on targeted practices related to menthol and other flavored commercial tobacco products on specific populations. The Collaborative experience, materials, and evaluation results will be shared with a discussion on next steps of the work in Rhode Island. Please feel free to share this invitation.
